Vocation is the deep commitment to follow God's call. It requires effort and care to truly understand that call. This process of discovering God's will is known as vocational discernment.
Proper discernment involves several key elements:
-
Deep self-knowledge: understanding your personality, your strengths and weaknesses, your inclinations, your spirituality, your mental capacities and even your physical health.
-
A solid knowledge of and a sincere love for our Catholic faith.
-
Familiarity with the different vocations, what they entail and the way of life they shape in those who embrace them.
Naturally, this process does not happen overnight. Vocational discernment is a journey that can take months or even years. It requires study, prayer and, above all, patience.
-
Discernment is not something that can be done alone. The best way to discern is with the guidance of the Church, ideally accompanied by a priest or a trusted spiritual director who helps you discover where God may be calling you.
