Vocation is the deep commitment to follow God’s call. Effort and care are required to truly understand that call. This process of discovering God’s will is known as vocational discernment.
Proper discernment involves several key elements:
-
Deep self-knowledge: understanding your personality, strengths and weaknesses, inclinations, spirituality, mental capacities, and even your physical health.
-
A solid knowledge of and a sincere love for our Catholic faith.
-
Familiarity with the different vocations, what they entail, and the way of life they shape in those who embrace them.
Naturally, this process does not happen overnight. Vocational discernment is a journey that can take months or even years. It requires study, prayer, and, above all, patience.
-
Discernment is not something that can be done in isolation. The best way to discern is with the guidance of the Church, ideally accompanied by a priest or a trusted spiritual director who helps you discover where God may be calling you.
